Here’s an under-appreciated subtropical flowering shrub you’re sure to love. Allamanda is an adorable shrub that blooms almost all year long with trumpet-shaped yellow flowers. These flowers bring butterflies (and occasionally hummingbirds) to the garden. It has low care needs, too, tolerating heat, drought, deer and rabbits.
- Can reach about 4 feet tall and wide
- Blooms year-round in frost-free areas, in the North, it blooms constantly from spring to fall
- Grows best in full Sun (at least 6-hours of direct Sun per day) or part Sun (morning shade with afternoon sun)
- Drought tolerant once established but benefits from regular watering
- Note: plant may have some natural degree of toxicity and may cause discomfort or illness if ingested additionally, exposure to the sap of plant may cause discomfort to individuals with a sensitivity to it upon contact, grown for ornamental purposes and not intended for human or animal consumption
- Typically deer- and rabbit-resistant
- Excellent in landscape beds, borders or in mass plantings and can also be used as a hedge or foundation plant
- Zones 10 to 11, but can be grown anywhere as a landscape annual or in container gardens
